13.. Manawahe Road

Submitted by Dave on

Got a new request from up in Manawahe. I went up to have a look yesterday morning and realised the mostly cutover block was surrounded by blocks we have culled in the distant past 10-20 years ago. So I went and reconnected with some of those farms and they were all very happy to see me.

We went back last night to look for birds. There was only one large mob we could find on the whole place. They were not roosting along the creek as suggested by the owner. First quarter moon was bright and that is never a good thing. There must have been 30 peafowl in one tree and it took a while to get in position using the monocular thermal vision.

We targeted the big males we could see first and the hens were flighty. About half flew away unharmed but the other half went for a ride.

We were driving out shortly after 10 pm. We also got two wallabies, one hare, one possum and one bunny. We will start on the old blocks soon and come back and clear this block when the new moon arrives.
