Waikaremoana

Submitted by Dave on

My son, Jack, and I recently made the great walk around Waikaremoana. We started at Onepoto and did not reach the water until day two. It was windy and rainy so we focused on the sheltered creek mouths. It was incredible how much water there was to fish, even in crappy conditions. We are definitely going back and I have a plan if you are interested.

I would walk in from Hopuruahine. It is maybe a four hour walk to Waiharuru Hut with so many shoreline opportunities along the way. From the hut there is access to so much stillwater from shore, full of cruising browns. From there it is only a couple of hours to Marauiti Hut for the second night with plenty of fishable water nearby. It is a good five hour walk to Waiopoa hut to stay for night three. Then you can make your way back fishing along the way. Feel free to contact me for more info but I reckon I would stay five nights before coming back out at Hopuruahine.
