Tough Conditions with Tony

Submitted by Dave on

Tony Richards has been fishing with me for 15 years now. He is a retired bone doctor from Arizona. He is the guy who caught the big brown on a cicada a couple of years ago.

It seems like our last many summers have been wet, almost, ever since the Edgecumbe flood back in 2017. This summer is no different so far. Big rain two weeks ago then another deluge last week made the river big and dirty again. Condolences to all that were affected by the tragedy at Mount Maunganui. I saw Jimmy Carr on Sunday night. I thought I said inappropriate stuff... I was sitting next to a guy from the Mount who lost his 72-year-old aunt. Talk about degrees of separation in NZ...

I scouted the river on Sunday and the spring creeks were clear, as always. The swamps at Aniwhenua were clear enough meaning parts of the top of the lake would be too. I mentioned the options to Tony and we decided to go to the spring creek where he had so much luck a couple of years before.

Below is the short video the summed up our half day. It was supposed to be sunny. It was overcast with some light showers. The cicadas were singing but you need sunshine to get them moving. We saw some browns but they were just too spooky to catch. Oh well, we tried.

Condolences to Tony and his family; they suffered a tragic loss last year and my heart goes out to him and Ali.
