We headed up to the top of Aniwhenua where the clearer water was flowing from the swamp. The river was still high and dirty but getting clearer. Tony got his first trout using a cone head krystal black bugger. It was caught on the edge of the main river. Clearly, it was clear enough for the fish to see.
It was early when we got there and very still.
It took a while for the fish to get active. We moved to the flats with an olive damsel. It worked well. Just about every fish was sighted or at least there was a rise to cast to.
We tried some other patterns and they all worked. We kept going back to the olive marabou damsel.
This fishing is not easy. It requires stealth, long casts and precision when spotted or rising trout are observed. Tony missed A LOT of strikes and had many near misses. It can be frustrating but it makes you better.
