Three Days at Tuai

Submitted by Dave on

Well, we got to Tuaai, Whakamarino Lodge, on Friday. We went for a fish along the edge. It can be challenging. We wanted a couple for the smoker. Dan got a good bow on a bead head krystal olive bugger. Then I got one on a bead head olive bugger. It took some work casting to the edges. I filleted them both and hot smoked them. Everyone was happy.

It was hard work. There were not many trout along the edges as I had expected. We worked it hard; I was just not seeing the reaction I had expected from many years before. We worked some of the dropoffs and it was just not happening.

I put on a dragon fly larva with a fly below. I knew it would be trouble in the weeds and it was. I broke off two big bows.

It was hard work but we were having so much fun being there that it did not matter.

It made me think really hard. I tried some very small wee wets, etc. and nothing really worked. If I had been more patient, I would have tried boobies/heave and leaves, etc. It was just great to be there again...
