Well we had Christmas lunch at Jack's Mum's place then Jack and I decided we should go for an evening fish up at Matahina. Steve had just fixing the broken yolk on the Predator canoe so we went to his place and picked it up on the way. Coincidentally, I dropped off my other canoe that also had a broken yolk. We grabbed some gear and got to Matahina a couple of hours before dark. It was pretty windy so we started in the cove by the boat ramp.
Jack started with a soft bait on the spinning rod. I put on a cone head krystal black woolly bugger. It was actually still on from the last outing. I had a chase almost right away and that was a good sign. Jack said he wanted to cast the fly rod so I handed it over. That's when he caught the first rainbow.
What a great result. I tied on a grey woolly bugger and we paddled along the edge while Jack casted. I was pretty excited to see Jack keen to be casting a fly. We did not even make it past the point of the bay and Jack hooked another nice rainbow. What better gift can you give your son for Christmas? On the way home we made plans for a full day adventure on the lake with Jack casting a fly the whole time. I could not be happier! All the best for the holidays and the new year...
