Mandingo Warrior Day 1

Submitted by Dave on

Dan and I grew up together on a little lake in New Jersey. We fished a lot from a very young age. He moved to Colorado a long time ago and I went to Canada for a while before coming to NZ. Long story short, it has taken him 25 years to get here. I was not sure what we would find up the river as we had lots of heavy rain in the previous days. So we headed up to Aniwhenua to fish the swamps leading into the lake if it was dirty. Turns out the whole system was clean and at normal levels. I could not believe it. All of the rain was along the coast for once and not up in the hills.

So I loaded Dan and wife Gail into the canoe and we headed down from Rabbit Bridge. With the clear water and shallow edges, it was a challenge for these two. No one seems used to this style of fishing a longish line to perfect edges to sighted fish. The fish did not disappoint and they both picked off fished amongst the channels and pockets around the weeds. There is nothing quite like watching a tail and dorsal fin out of the water and feeding along.

They both caught a few fish and it was a good start.
