Jigging at Lake Rotoiti

Submitted by Dave on

Michael, his Dad, and I had another afternoon trip to Rotoiti. Yes it had rained for the last two days and had been cooler for the last week. That simply means the thermocline will change for the season and the trout will disperse. Some will roam the cool waters forever but a lot of them will start to congregate at the stream mouths where they were stocked. Long story short, there were plenty of fish on the sounder and lots of smelt. The trout were at bit lock jawed. I kept changing flies while the boys stuck to their grey ghosts. Both the regular and the short shank caught fish. I got one on the Taupo Tiger short shank. Peter got one, I got one and Michael caught three including a 9.5 pound specimen on the short shank grey ghost. He is the master.
