The Dry Fly Master

Submitted by Dave on

Meet Nick, currently living in Sweden. He has been around NZ a lot and has lived here before. In fact, he is the founder of Owen River Lodge. He wanted to cast a dry fly today.

We floated down the river and he cast a size 4 deer hair cicada olive with rubber legs on his 5 wt. I tied on a length of 10 lb flouro with the same old instructions to count to three before striking. The river was still a bit high and not clear. That did not bother the trout any; they were hungry and targeting cicadas. We did some excellent side creek and spring creek sight fishing. We did go down to smaller flies like a parachute caddis and parachute Adams for some delicate presentations. Everything worked and he landed around 20 trout. Today was mostly rainbows.
