Two days later, Jack and I were back at Matahina. This time we decided to have an early start. Conditions were perfect. It was dead calm and overcast. Every rise could be seen from a distance and there were plenty of them.
Jack brought his fly rod this time. It still had a short shank Taupo Tiger jigging smelt on since the last time he used his rod. The leader was crappy but he put it in the water. It was not long before he caught a nice brown on it. I changed his leader up and then he used an olive and black bugger. It took a little while but he got a nice brown after missing and losing a few.
Jack fished for a while while I paddled until he decided he had had enough. It was my turn to play while he paddled. It was hard work and I missed quite a few. I managed to pick up a few more fish. That included a fat rainbow on an olive bugger that went home to accompany the other two rainbows in the smoker.
We made our way all the way up past the bridge and into the spring creek for a look. We spotted a couple of smallish fish but there was not much activity there. We made our way back down the river/lake casting here and there as we went. All in all, it was a great day with good company.
