Another Go at Rotoiti

Submitted by Dave on

Michael and his Dad, Peter, took me out for another evening fish on Rotoiti. The night before saw some heavy rain and a southerly change. It was slow, unlike the other night. The fish were on the sounder but not taking like last time. This time I tried a two fly rig instead of three. We had so many double and triple hookups that almost always wound up tangling and breaking off gear. I landed three and Michael landed the same number with his three fly setup. The pearl and white jigging smelt is a killer at the moment as the trout were targeting juvenile smelt. I used a size 6 at the bottom and a short shanked version above. As soon as they caught a fish I changed the flies. A short shanked yellow lady and Grant's jigging smelt did not work but the short shanked grey rabbit and the short shanked grey ghost both caught fish. Michael sticks with what he thinks will work best and he landed the two biggest of the night. The big one had to be close to ten pounds. I think we landed about eight fish all up so not a bad effort. We are pretty spoiled around here.
